The CampBurke music project

I’ve decided to focus my music project on song’s I’d love to hear more often in church.  Don’t get me wrong!  I love the traditional hymns and classical music our choir performs but,  I’ve realized over the years that the songs I like to listen to and sing along with outside of Church are a bit more  ‘Rustic’ than the traditional  (although I often get hymns stuck in my head).

I sang in what has been called the Jesus Music era in California in the late 60’s and into the early 70’s.  I learned to strum a guitar with some friends each Sunday singing in a Folk Mass at Agnew State Hospital and later throughout California with a Lutheran church group.  What we called contemporary music (I played Harmonica and Bongos!) has had a powerful impact on my own Christian beliefs.   The Folk style music we sang fits more clearly to me into a  category of music which is often defined as Americana.

My own definition is that Americana music pulls from many different styles of music such as folk, bluegrass, country, rock, blues and in the songs I’ve selected to learn a bit of gospel as well .  If you prefer here is a definition from Wikipedia or YouTube you may enjoy.
